Dispute resolution, dispute settlement, and conflict resolution describe the processes used to settle disputes between parties who have brought a case to court or mediation. While “conflict resolution” is sometimes used as a synonym for dispute resolution, usually “conflict” details an argument more complex and long-held than a dispute, which would then be likely to entail a longer and costlier court battle. Legal dispute resolution techniques are used to quell antagonisms between the disputing parties with the aim to settle the case outside of court, however, the most common trajectory for resolving disputes is through court. Parties to a dispute can be governments, corporations, or citizens. Disputes can be solved either adversarially or amicably, but they are often taken to court for a resolution to be decided upon by a neutral third party.
