A Statement of Case is the document, or set of documents, where each party confirms their position in an issued claim. You may also hear it referred to as a “pleading”, which was the term used before the Civil Procedure Rules were introduced in 1997. 

For claimants, the Statement of Case outlines the facts of the case, what it is you’re asking for, and the legal reasons supporting the claim. For defendants, it explains why you dispute the claim and your reasons for doing so.

It is essential to get the particulars of the document right because it helps the court and the other side understand each party’s position. It must be clear, accurate, and well-organised because a poorly prepared Statement of Case can delay proceedings or weaken your position.
